After years of boredom in her rural South Carolina town, Maria is thrilled when her father finally allows her to visit her estranged artist mother in New York City. She’s ready for adventure, and she soon finds herself immersed in a world of rock music and busy streets, where new people and ideas lie around every concrete corner. This is the freedom she’s always longed for—and she pushes for as much as she can get, skipping school to roam the streets, visit fancy museums, and flirt with the cute clerk at a downtown record store.
But just like her beloved New York City, Maria’s life has a darker side. Behind her mother’s carefree existence are shadowy secrets, and Maria must decide just where—and with whom—her loyalty lies.
My Review:
The reason why I picked this book is because I was loving contemporary at that time. I still do, I'm trying to read more of those cutey book. This book was okay for me. I like it but I don't love it. I want to love all the contemporary i read. It's just a feeling that I have to love it. I gave this 4/5 because I wasn't really into it much. I hate her mom. :)
First Chapter: Maria never met her mom before...or was it never stay with? I don't know, I forgot sorry! Anyways, Maria think it's time for her to move to New York City to live with her mom. When she got off the plane, she been waiting for a few hours and her mom haven't picked her up yet. She didn't want to call her grandmother because she doesn't want to make her mom to look bad. After a few hours, her mom suddenly comes and she has a boyfriend. He's a couple years younger then her mom. She just tours around New York.
The 'Mom': I definitely don't think she should be called a mom. She's like a freaking teenager, who wants to do whatever she wants. That's not a mom to me. But she doesn't have health problems. She smokes, does drugs, and other things. I do like that she has a fun personality but still....she needs to act like a mother. She paints and draw.
Mom's Boyfriend: He's probably like 20 or somewhere around that. He plays the guitar in a band. It's kinda weird because he spends more time with Maria then he does with his girlfriend. I don't want to give anything else out so :)
Mixtapes: Mixtapes are Cd's that Maria's best friend makes for her every week or whenever. It's just a CD filled with music. Any type.
This book is mostly about music, I'm guess. It involves around the mom too. The music is in the 1950's, I not sure but I think I'm right. It's when the Beatles were out and stuff. Haha, so the book haven't came out yet but it will in a couple of weeks.
